I have never heard of Screen Research. Is it a new company?

Not at all. Screen Research was founded in 2001 by scientists and industry professionals with deep expertise in audio/video technology. Today, with over 25 years of history, the company is a consolidated global benchmark, celebrated for definitively solving the compromise between image quality and acoustic transparency.

What is a ClearPix screen?

ClearPix is a line of projection surfaces made from a proprietary fabric patented by Screen Research. Its fundamental characteristic is true acoustic transparency: it allows sound to pass through the screen unaltered while guaranteeing reference-level video quality.

Why should I use a ClearPix projection surface?

To achieve the most realistic cinematic experience, sound and image must originate from the same location. Placing the front speakers behind the screen (as is done in commercial movie theaters) is the only way to achieve this. ClearPix makes this configuration possible without sacrificing audio or video performance.

Is it true that perforated screens are not suitable for modern projectors?

Yes, this is often true for traditional perforated vinyl screens. The holes can interfere with the pixel grid of digital projectors (especially in 4K and 8K), creating a distracting visual artifact called the “Moiré effect.” Screen Research ClearPix projection surfaces, however, are woven fabrics (not perforated) with a specific structure designed to totally eliminate Moiré and support the highest resolutions without compromise.

Why are ClearPix surfaces woven rather than perforated?

The specific weave of ClearPix materials is technologically much more complex to manufacture than simply punching holes in plastic. However, this complexity ensures true acoustic transparency and a complete absence of Moiré effects, ensuring a state-of-the-art video (and audio) performance.

Some manufacturers recommend grey or high-contrast surfaces. Are they necessary?

Grey surfaces or ALR (Ambient Light Rejecting) technologies help improve black levels in environments that are not completely dark. However, with the advent of HDR and modern high-contrast Laser projectors, the need for corrective screens has decreased in dedicated rooms. ClearPix surfaces are available in various versions (including Reference White and Grey) to perfectly adapt to both pitch-black dedicated theaters and media rooms with some ambient light.

Are ClearPix projection surface suitable for 4K and 8K Laser projectors?

Absolutely. Our “Reference White” surfaces are ideal for modern UHD Laser projectors, offering a neutral gain for a faithful and high-contrast image. The fabric structure is so fine that it perfectly resolves 4K and 8K detail, surpassing the limits of older technologies.

Do I need a special speaker layout for use with ClearPix?

No. Unlike older perforated vinyl screens, which required at least 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) of clearance to avoid “comb-filtering” (high-frequency interference), ClearPix products require no minimum distance. You can place the speakers almost touching the back of the screen, saving valuable room space.

Why does placing speakers behind the screen improve the perceived sound quality?

When speakers are positioned behind an acoustically transparent screen, the sound appears to come directly from the image rather than from below or beside it. This happens due to a psychoacoustic principle known as the ventriloquism effect: the brain naturally fuses what we see with what we hear, anchoring the sound to the visual source. The result is dialogue that feels more realistic, natural, and perfectly aligned with the on-screen action, creating a far more immersive viewing experience.

Where should I place the center speaker?

The center speaker should be positioned directly behind the center of the screen, at the same height as the tweeters of the left and right speakers (ideally at the seated listener’s ear height).

How much do ClearPix surface affect sound clarity?

The impact is negligible. Attenuation is minimal (often less than 1dB) and linear across all frequencies. No complex equalization is needed: simply increasing the level of the speakers behind the screen by about 1dB in your processor is sufficient. No muffled sound, just crystal-clear purity.

Do Screen Research products reflect sound back towards the speakers?

No. Being woven fabrics rather than solid perforated surfaces, there is no significant acoustically reflective surface in the sound wave’s path. This eliminates the need for heavy acoustic treatment on the wall behind the screen to absorb return reflections.

Will the screen flap with sound waves passing through?

Under normal conditions, there is no visible movement. However, if using a subwoofer or speaker with a powerful reflex port moving a lot of air positioned just millimeters from a motorized (non-tensioned) screen, slight movement could occur. With our fixed-frame or tensioned motorized screens, this issue is virtually non-existent.

What types of mounting does Screen Research offer?

We offer a complete range: fixed frames (with or without velvet borders), curved screens, motorized in-ceiling systems (such as the famous line that completely hides the casing), and systems with motorized masking to adapt the projection area to the movie format.

What sizes and aspect ratios are available?

Our projection screens support the full range of commonly used aspect ratios, achieved either through precise masking systems or as native formats. Available sizes span from 80 inches up to an impressive 900 inches of image width for our commercial cinema solutions.

What size screen should I buy?

This depends on your viewing distance and projector resolution. With modern 4K UHD content, you can sit closer than in the past for greater immersion. A modern general rule suggests a viewing distance of approximately 1.0 to 1.5 times the screen width.

Is the ClearPix woven structure visible during projection?

No. The structure of our modern surface is designed to be invisible from normal viewing distances. The optical resolution of the fabric supports pixel densities well beyond 4K and 8K, ensuring a sharp image free of perceivable texture.

How is the fabric attached to the frame?

We use patented tensioning systems (such as E-Grip or advanced spring systems) that guarantee a perfectly flat surface over time. No snaps or Velcro that degrade: the screen remains taut like a drum, without wrinkles or sagging.

Why should I invest so much in a projection screen?

The screen is half of the video system. Choosing the wrong screen can negate the investment made in an expensive projector. The combination of color fidelity, lack of texture, contrast, and, above all, perfect audio placement, was a difficult goal to achieve before the advent of ClearPix technology.

How can I be sure of the quality?

Don’t just take our word for it. Screen Research fabrics hold some of the most prestigious certifications in the industry, including ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) for video fidelity, THX for audio and video performance, and PVA (Professional Video Alliance). It is the only brand to have historically achieved all these certifications for its acoustically transparent screens.
